Artist Statement

Yu Ru Li constructs fictional worlds through speculative narratives, using painting to explore how human civilization operates within vast, interconnected systems. These systems often appear as monumental structures that function simultaneously as physical spaces and as mechanisms in continuous motion. Her compositions frequently employ cross-sectional and layered perspectives, allowing multiple spaces and moments to coexist within a single image. Through carefully arranged details and narrative clues, viewers are invited to gradually uncover the internal logic of these imagined worlds and form their own interpretations. Human figures often appear diminutive in contrast to the monumental structures that surround them, reflecting the relationship between individuals and the larger systems to which they belong. Rather than remaining static, these systems gradually reveal signs of fracture, exhaustion, and decline over time.

Li’s practice focuses on the construction and consumption of systems, examining how contemporary society incorporates individuals into seemingly rational yet ultimately closed structures. Her work investigates relationships of dependency and the dissipation of energy, questioning whether the very foundations that sustain these systems are gradually being depleted beneath their appearance of stability. Through these fictional environments, she reflects on the interdependent relationship between humanity and the world it inhabits.

Ultimately, Li’s paintings use fictional worlds as a means of responding to reality. Rather than offering an escape from the real world, these imagined systems reorganize and reinterpret it, making visible the underlying structures that often remain unseen and allowing them to be experienced in a tangible and perceptible form.
