After two years, Neptune Gallery is honored to once again invite Japanese artist Ryota Kanno to Taiwan for a solo exhibition, “TOUR.” Ryota Kanno born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1988, and graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. Through his signature technique of “light sculpting,” he explores the boundless interaction between light and sculpture, leading viewers on a mesmerizing journey of illumination and form.
Inspired by bodies of water such as the ocean and swimming pools, Kanno employs the principles of refraction, reflection, and transmission to capture the fleeting yet eternal essence of water. The exhibition title, “漫・游 TOUR,” is a play on words—derived from the English word “TOUR” and the Chinese translation “漫遊” (meaning “leisurely roaming”), while also incorporating the character “游” (meaning “swim”) to reflect the artist’s unique aesthetic.
Using epoxy resin, Kanno sculpts by hand after the material has hardened, engraving delicate marks that allow light to shimmer and dance across the surface, creating effects impossible to replicate with molds. His blue resin pigments and refined carving techniques generate layered ripples that evoke the refreshing tranquility of a summer poolside, freezing ephemeral moments of coolness within the exhibition space. By reshaping the spatial dimensions of sculpture, Kanno masterfully captures the poetry of shifting light and waves, unveiling the hidden beauty in the everyday.
The concept of “漫・游” also embodies cyclical movement. The ocean, swimming pools, circular motifs, and goldfish all symbolize cycles, and Kanno seeks to translate these natural patterns into artistic expressions, where synthetic materials harmoniously coexist with nature. Perhaps, in these forms, we instinctively perceive the grand cycle of life itself. We sincerely invite you to experience this captivating interplay of light and sculpture in person.
Artist’s Statement:
The theme of this solo exhibition is “漫・游 TOUR.” My works revolve around the ocean and other bodies of water. These sculptures, based on a flat-plane foundation, symbolize the artist’s journey in pursuit of realism.
The concept of “tour” also carries the meaning of “cycle.” The ocean, swimming pools, circular forms, and goldfish all represent cycles. Perhaps, on an instinctive level, we can sense the grand cycle of life through these elements.
Exhibition Dates: March 22, 2025 (Saturday) – April 22, 2025 (Tuesday)
