New Perspectives on Nihonga presents the recent works of six artists who take Nihonga as their core medium, continually responding to contemporary perception and modes of viewing. Rakusui KO, Nanami SHIMOJU, Masumi YAMAMOTO, Raizo YAMASAKI, Yong Xin HONG, and Yi Shuan WU each unfold nuanced inquiries into figures, landscapes, and inner sensibilities through their own creative rhythms and perspectives, while sharing a common material language. The layered surfaces, luminosity, and sense of time created by mineral pigments allow the paintings to hold subtle yet enduring emotional shifts within their quiet presence—an essential language through which Nihonga continues to evolve and transform.
The exhibition encompasses themes of the human figure, nature, and inner landscapes. Rather than seeking formal uniformity, the artists develop distinct viewpoints and rhythms upon a shared foundation of technique and material. Some works focus on the gaze upon human expression and states of being; others respond to memory, time, and the flow of emotion through depictions of landscape and space, transforming each painting into a field for prolonged contemplation and return.
Through the juxtaposition of these six artistic practices, Japanese Painting · New Perspectives aims to illuminate the diverse possibilities of Nihonga in a contemporary context. While maintaining a deep respect for materiality and technique, the works naturally integrate the artists’ personal experiences and sensibilities of the present era. In this way, traditional media are not merely preserved forms, but living practices that continue to generate meaning and resonate with our time. The exhibition invites viewers to move slowly between the works and experience the depth and enduring allure of Nihonga within a space of quiet reflection.
