Formosa: Songs of the Seasons―An artistic journey through rhythm and renewal
(Yi-Shuan Wu)
(Chin-Chih Wang)
(Yu-Chen Tsai)
(I-Long Chen)
In the shifting light and shadow of the island, the tides of time continue without end. Seasons return, nature renews itself, and life unfolds in an eternal cycle. Titled “The Song of the Four Seasons” under the name “Formosa,” this exhibition brings together four artists whose distinct perspectives and artistic languages respond to the rhythms of nature and the enduring spirit of regeneration. Through the passage of time, their works transform perception into a poetic journey through light, color, and memory.
Yi-Shuan Wu
A graduate of the Department of Japanese Painting at Tama Art University in Japan, Yi-Shuan Wu works primarily with mineral pigments and metal leaf. Inspired by light, shadow, and the natural world, she captures the fleeting atmosphere of the changing seasons. Her dreamlike compositions preserve ephemeral moments in time, inviting viewers to experience the quiet passage of time and the perpetual cycle of life through luminous layers of color.
Chin-Chih Wang
Chin-Chih Wang graduated from Musashino Art University in Japan and is known for combining mineral pigments with watercolor in his practice. Drawing upon the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and yūgen, his poetic compositions of reflections, flowers, and landscapes contemplate the rhythms of nature and the transience of existence. His paintings evoke a subtle and ever-changing dialogue between humanity and the environment.
Yu-Chen Tsai
Holding an M.F.A. from the Department of Fine Arts at National Kaohsiung Normal University, Yu-Chen Tsai explores the relationship between everyday life and perception through fragmented compositions and multiple viewpoints. By reassembling overlooked objects and fleeting moments, she transforms ordinary scenes into meditations on memory and change, allowing the familiar to be reborn on the canvas and revealing a sense of permanence within continual transformation.
I-Long Chen
I-Long Chen earned his master’s degree in the Graduate Institute of Art and Design at National Taipei University of Education and was an exchange student in the Department of Oil Painting at Capital Normal University in Beijing. Working across painting, conceptual practice, and socially engaged themes, he reflects on time and structures of power through the interplay of figurative imagery and symbolic forms. In this exhibition, he centers on the idea of regeneration, reconstructing images and narratives through painting to transform “Formosa” into a space where memory and renewal converge.
Through their individual artistic vocabularies, the four artists respond to the island’s climate, the passage of time, and its emotional landscape. Their works unfold like the chapters of the four seasons—from the awakening of spring and the abundance of summer to the fading of autumn and the stillness of winter—creating a resonant dialogue on nature, time, and the self.
Formosa is more than a place name; it is a canvas shaped by history and a poetic landscape where memory, nature, and culture intersect.
This exhibition unfolds as a flowing symphony—one that speaks of transformation and renewal, of contemplation and perception, and of the island’s enduring breath.
