Neptune Gallery | D08

Neptune Gallery is honored to make its debut in Hong Kong, presenting a dual exhibition featuring Japanese artist Ryota Kanno and Taiwanese artist Yi-Ting Tsai at Art Central HK during the grand opening of Hong Kong Art Week.

Born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1988, Ryota Kanno graduated from the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. Through his unique “sculpting with light” technique, he continuously explores the boundless possibilities of light and shadow interacting with sculpture, inviting viewers on a journey into the interplay of light and form.

Yi-Ting Tsai, born in 1990, integrates mechanical elements as a creative medium to deeply explore the essence of life. She infuses mechanical systems with artistic vitality, where precise components and repetitive mechanical movements transcend mere function, embodying the energy of life itself.

Ryota Kanno draws inspiration from bodies of water such as the ocean and swimming pools. Using the principles of refraction, reflection, and transmission of light, he captures the ephemeral yet eternal nature of water through his sculpting techniques. His work primarily utilizes epoxy resin, which, once hardened, is meticulously hand-carved to create delicate incisions that reflect and refract light in a way that molds cannot replicate. The combination of blue resin pigment and relief carving techniques gives his artworks a layered, wave-like effect—preserving the fleeting coolness of a summer poolside moment within space. By transforming the dimensions of sculpture, Kanno not only carves out the reality of waves but also conveys the poetic interplay of light and shadow, allowing viewers to rediscover the hidden and unparalleled beauty within everyday life.

Taiwanese new media artist Yi-Ting Tsai has received the Excellence Award in New Media Art from Taipei National University of the Arts and the First Prize of the Taoyuan Art Award. She has also been invited to participate in the NEU NOW Festival in Amsterdam, organized by the European League of Institutes of the Arts, as well as the CHRONIQUES Digital Art Biennale in southern France.

In her practice, Tsai seeks a constant state of motion within mechanical installations, approaching the human experience of labor and alienation with a rational yet poetic perspective. She treats the absolute precision of mechanical movements as an abstract language, conveying a profound philosophical inquiry. Like a physics experiment, her work proposes hypotheses beyond conventional logic, defining new parameters to explore the macro and micro perspectives of time, space, and existence. Through her work, she investigates light and shadow as transient yet existential mediums, bridging the tangible and intangible.

Art Central 2025 will take place from March 25 (Tuesday) to March 30 (Sunday). We sincerely invite you to experience in person the poetic interplay of light, shadow, and mechanical precision.
