Artist Statement
Born in Saitama, Japan, Takami Miyaoka’s practice is rooted in memories of the cultural environment and landscapes he encountered in his childhood. These experiences continue to flow deeply within him, overlapping with shifting mental landscapes across time, as he persistently searches for his own “form.”
For the artist, clay serves as a medium of memory. Familiar since childhood, it is a material that offers both high flexibility in form-making and the structural strength required for sculpture. He is continuously drawn to its dual qualities of softness and strength, working with it through direct, tactile engagement.
The “characters” within his practice remain constant. Regardless of changing eras, he perceives them as akin to the icons and archetypes continually produced by society. He also hopes that the spirit embodied within his works—like a soul—can exist as a presence that speaks directly to the viewer’s inner emotions and thoughts.
