Artist Statement
For Takeshi Machiya, trees and wood embody the spirit of animism. He collects a wide variety of wood as the primary material for his sculptures, many of which have existed longer than his own lifetime. These fragments may come from old houses, furniture, driftwood gathered from the sea, rivers, mountains, or towns, or from places encountered during his travels abroad.
By assembling wood with diverse histories and origins, Machiya creates works that evoke encounters and partings across different environments, cultures, and generations. Each sculpture becomes a meeting point where memories embedded in the material are brought together, allowing the traces of time and place to coexist within a single form.
